A dictionary definition of pity is “a feeing of sympathy and sadness caused by the suffering and troubles of others.”
I do not think that there is one human being who has not felt sad about his or her own circumstances at a particular time. It may be because of a bad grade on an exam, because we took ill, because we lost an opportunity or contract, because we are heartbroken or for any of many other reasons. But this is not pity.
Pity is when we sympathize or feel sad because someone else is suffering these things or in one sort of trouble or another. Pity goes beyond self. God is Omniscient, Omnipresent and Omnipotent and does not have to worry about failing an exam or what He'll eat tomorrow. Yet, He sympathizes with us. He feels our emotions. He is happy at our joy and sad at our sorrows and He helps us get through them if we allow Him.
“In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in His love and in his pity He redeemed them; and He bare them, and carried them all the days of old.” - Isaiah 63:9.
Conclusively, let everyone
also remember to show pity unto others. Proverbs 19:17 - “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will He pay him again.”
